He would’ve been a good, balanced president. But choosing a crazy bitch as running mate, didn’t helped his case. Neither did running against a guy with bucket loads of charisma who also was on the right side of history.

He did also run against this guy:

I was talking about 2008, obviously.

I have to disagree. He would have been a disasterous president. I am consistently very far right and the Obama vs Mcain election is the only one that ever ever made me consider voting for a democrat in the primary. Call me naive but at he time, and maybe still today, I think Obama was he better pick.

He may be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, but he is pretty charismatic.

Yep, I wanted to imply that I somehow thought those words applied to W, but I really couldn’t find any way to make them believable.
I’ve been seeing a lot of backlash against McCain for voting with his party most of the time, but honestly that’s expected, he is a Republican. But I think he was a pretty reasonable one, and I think has been far more willing to actually act instead of simply speaking like his colleague Jeff Flake.
He has things that are fair to criticize (Sarah Palin, his hawkishness, cheating on his wife), but on the whole, I think he was a dedicated public servant and we are diminished without him.

Of course Obama was better, that was McCain’s tough luck, to win the nomination, but to run against the best candidate to come out of the DNC since Bill Clinton.

You need that c harisma to be a successful cheerleader.

Try Kennedy. If I was alive at the time it be surprised if I didn’t voted for John F.

Indeed, when you earn the respect of the other team, you know you did good.
I have huge respect for McCain, and I even find Obama and Hillary to be too conservative, sometimes.

I agree with Maxima. He would have been a disaster. His post election tv interviews on foreign policy make Trump look like a teddy bear.
The guy was an american hero for his service (both in war and in senate) but there were a lot of better picks for President (even potentially Ron Paul).

Says a lot about the festering pile of shit in the WH today that McCain, who was barely palatable at his best, looks like a reasonable way forward in comparison.

I voted for Ron Paul in the republican race. Did he run independent that year after he lost out? I might have voted for him in he main as well.

His legacy would unfortunately be tainted with the disaster from Alaska forever.
His nomination of Palin opened the door to the openly bigoted, hysterical, and conspiracy minded electorate that brought 45 to power. Her embrace of the prototype of the tea party and her elevation of openly racist elements of the GOP is what doomed politics of today. She might be a loser, but her impact is enormous.

He was a good man. Yeah, his views on some issues weren’t up to date, but he was a genuine human being, a quality you won’t find in the current administration that’s formed mostly out of rats and lizards.

I can go with that. He wasn’t an opportunist. He’d have been 100x the president as the current resident.
I think he may have realized or admitted the “wrong side of history” ideal a little late, but eventually, I think he knew it.

In 2008, he was a write-in in some states. In 2012, he ran as the Libertarian candidate.

I’d have voted for McCain if not for Palin. It’s the only time I can ever remember the Vice President determining my vote. I think people’s opinions of him (particular liberals) are going to be colored by Trump...McCain now looks like a reasonable alternative in contrast to Trump, where in reality he was basically a regular ass Republican.

2x Obama voter but would have voted for McCain over anyone else running in 2016

He wanted to pick Joe Lieberman as his running mate. Political advisers convinced him otherwise. I w atched “For Whom the Bell Tolls” the day he died, before the news of his passing. It’s worth your time if you can find it. He was by no means a perfect man, but he strove to be honest and honorable, and took ownership of his mistakes when he fell short.
